How did you learn to speak?

09.04.2014 by AlanaRocks //

You probably don’t remember learning how to use language, because it happened when you were a baby. You didn’t have to memorize vocabulary lists, conjugate verbs, or learn how to use the proper pronoun. You just learned to use words and phrases in the right context, and voila! language grew. I learned to speak French and Japanese in much the same way, by complete immersion- focusing on understanding meaning and communication first, and learning grammatical structures later. I try to recreate the immersion experience when I teach French, using language in familiar contexts so that students can elicit meaning without direct translation. I use games, actions, music, drama and speaking activities to reinforce the speaking and comprehension aspect of language, to build confidence, and to provide a contextual foundation for learning grammar. It’s fun, natural, and hopefully it sparks an interest and love of language that will open the door to our global village.
